‘Dudes!’ cried Chad in his American drawl, as he entered Charley’s trailer with her peppermint tea. ‘I heard about what happened last night. Are you OK?’

‘We’re fine, thank you,’ said Charley calmly.

‘Who knew the weather was gonna be so bad?’ asked Chad, more as a statement than a question. Was he over-defending himself?

Charley took the opportunity to pounce. ‘You did,’ she replied, stony-faced.

‘Whaddya mean?’ cried Chad, as innocently as he could.

‘We spoke to the people at the BridgeClimb,’ said Charley. ‘They said you were told about the weather conditions but insisted the climb go ahead.’

Charley was cold, clinical, sharp. In some ways she was playing a character, but in another way she was simply showing how she felt.

Chad looked panicked. ‘I, um, well … yeah, I kinda …’

‘Why did you insist the climb should go ahead,’ Charley went on, ‘when you knew how dangerous it would be?’

‘I didn’t have a choice,’ said Chad desperately. ‘I was … operating under orders.’

‘What does that mean?’ interrupted George.

‘I was told to make sure the climb went ahead, no matter what.’

‘By who?’ said Charley.

Chad’s eyes darted around the room, as if looking for a way out. He clearly didn’t want to answer the question.

‘By who?’ repeated George.

Chad was under attack from both sides. ‘I’m not supposed to tell you,’ he whimpered.

‘Whoever it was purposely put Charley’s life in danger,’ said George, nodding to her. ‘Chad, you have to tell us who it was.’

Neither Charley or George was going to let up, and Charley could tell Chad knew it.

‘It was, um, it was …’

Charley employed the same quiet tone her mum used when she was really angry. Quiet but firm.

‘Who told you to make sure the BridgeClimb went ahead?’

Chad’s eyes darted to the window as a figure walked past, then returned to his interrogators.

‘It was Curtis,’ he said plainly.
